Gawith Hoggarth | Reunion Series Brown House Pipe Tobacco | 25g Loose
Since 1865 Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth have been separate entities, producing their own wonderful tobaccos and competing in an amicable way. After more than 150 years apart, the two greatest Kendal tobacco companies reunite. This momentous occasion is being celebrated with the release of three Reunion Special tobaccos, “Brown House”, “No. 27” and “Reunion”.
Brown House, the iconic home to Samuel Gawith & Co Ltd has been honoured by this coin-cut, flue cured Virginia and dark fired Mozambique grown Kentucky. The tobacco is of utmost quality, as you’d expect from this eponymized blend. The mottled coins are easy to work with, being quite soft and malleable, making them easy to rub to ribbon. There’s a mild, honest tobacco scent to the leaf, which intensified as you rub but there is no strong odour or heavy smell, no hint of casing or topping. Upon lighting, the tobacco releases flavours of the Virginias, light, sweet and hay-like. Then steadily, the Kentucky, though fairly light in quantity, gives a punchy wood, oaky, mildly smoky tone. There’s no domination but the flavours sway in and out, gently dancing upon the palate. Maple can just be detected, without over sweetening the bowl, it’s complimentary to both tobaccos. Not an overly complex blend it can be enjoyed with or without paying attention to the subtleties and evolution of flavour.
