The brand that defines Cuba, initially made for Castro in 1966 at the El Laguito factory, which was specially commissioned to produce them and only rolled by the country's finest torcedores.
Today, the brand is a byword for quality, the cigars only having been released for sale to the public in 1982. This is the ninth Limited Edition released by Cohiba and originally scheduled for 2021, to commemorate 55 years of Cohiba, but world events intervened.
Presented in boxes of 10, this unique size measures 5 7/8" in length with a 57-ring gauge, known in the factories as a Victoria, it is classed as medium to full in strength. Rolled with leaf from the famous Vuelta Abajo region in Pinar del Rio, which has been carefully aged for a minimum of two years, production is minimal to ensure quality is maintained.
It almost seems a crime to light up one of these superb cigars but in doing so it's almost like one's eyes (and nose) are opened up to a new vista.
The aromas are complex, intriguing and beautifully matched. There are notes of coffee and dark chocolate mixed with nuts and warm spices, all wrapped in a hard-to-define sweetness.
The even burn combined with a smooth draw is a joy to behold, we are talking Cuban here, and will delight and surprise many a sceptic.
This is a cigar that demands your time and attention to fully appreciate just exactly what has gone into making this masterpiece.
