An Introduction to World Cigars
Most people have heard of Cuban cigars, but not everyone has heard of new world cigars, but you can put that down to marketing and tradition more than anything else.
New world cigars, also known as non-Cuban cigars, come from countries around Cuba. For instance, from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Honduras, among others. The reason why they’re less well-known than other types of cigars is because those countries are not historically associated with cigars.
How the Embargo helped New World Cigars flourish
Everything changed in Cuba in the 1950s. The trade embargo introduced in 1958 meant that it became more difficult for Cuban cigar producers to sell their products. In 1962 the tobacco industry was nationalised, overnight, all cigar production was owned by the Government.
As a result of the political turmoil, many Cubans left the country and settled in neighbouring nations. And many of those departing Cubans were cigar makers, who simply began producing their tobacco products in their new homes.
However, it took time for people to associate anywhere other than Cuba as a quality producer of cigars. Great cigars were made in Cuba, not Nicaragua! Slowly but surely, however, people began paying attention to the products on offer, and today New World Cigars have a loyal following.
How New World Cigars got its name
We know of at least two reason why the name New World Cigars was chosen. Cuba represents the 'Old World' of cigar production. Secondly, cigar production from Central American countries meant that they could be sold to the US, representing the 'New World'.
New world cigars, otherwise known as non-Cuban cigars, refer to cigars produced outside of Cuba, including in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The production of new world cigars began in the 1960s, when many Cuban cigar producers left the political unrest of Cuba for nearby countries.
The reputation of new world cigars has been slowly growing over the years, and today they’re known all over the world for offering quality at an affordable price.
New world cigars have one key advantage over Cuban cigars, and that’s that they’re not bound by the same rigid production processes as Cuban cigars, which are state-controlled. That means new world cigars tend to have a more diverse range of flavour profiles than Cuban cigars.
Many cigar aficionados believe that new world cigars are better than their Cuban counterparts. Despite offering similar levels of craftsmanship and quality, New World cigars tend to be significantly cheaper than Cuban cigars.
New world cigars are produced by a number of countries, which means that there are many options available. In fact, in our store there are more new world cigar varieties than Cuban cigar varieties.
Some of our best-selling new world cigars include:
