Peterson's Signature Flake is a beautiful, entirely Virginia flake. The tin description says it’s a "traditional English Flake" but don’t let this fool you into thinking there are other leaves in here other than Virginia. True enough the flavours are complex and varied for a straight Virginia, you may even be fooled into thinking there’s a peppering of Perique in here. It seems that the Virginias used have been sourced from many locations and are of different sub-types. There are certainly mature and young leaves evident. The whole ‘grassy hay-like flavours’ typical of Virginias are not of the norm, they are riper and more mellowed than run of the mill blends. It’s like Peterson has searched their stock of Virginia, their sources too and decided to use only the very best. After all, this is a Signature Flake.

As you open the tin and come to the tobacco, your eyes are in for a treat! The luxurious, intriguing texture of this flake is remarkable. Like wood or marble, the grain, the flecks, light on dark, capture the imagination. Pick up a piece and start rubbing. Release the aroma of Virginia as it should always be. When you’re ready, pack your pipe, light, tamp, light and puff. You’ll notice there’s a slight nuttiness to be found here as well as the delicious matured sweet hay. There’s mild citrus and all the flavours come to evolve towards the bottom of the bowl. They become more caramelised, almost smoky. Has Peterson cheated by adding other leaves or have they just done a superb job with this tobacco? If you really want to get the best out of this flake, it’s advised that you smoke it using a pipe dedicated to Virginias, or even one solely for Signature Flake. This sets a high benchmark if you’re going to compare it to other Virginia flakes. It also serves as a great smoke to initialise and realign your taste buds and palate. At the end of the bowl, you’re left with dry ash, no sticky dottle. Your pipe is easy to clean and you are left with a pleasant aftertaste and fond memories.
